With the excitement and joy surrounding the approaching fresh start of a new year, it’s easy to forget that 2020’s wake forced thousands of families out of jobs and homes.

Since March, the number of people throughout the country forced to go hungry has escalated to unprecedented levels. To alleviate this suffering, organizations like Food Forward and their community partners have doubled their distribution of recovered produce to feed Southern  Californians in 8 counties.

Each week Food Forward staff and volunteers rescue over 1,000,000 pounds of surplus produce from fruit trees, farmers’ markets, and the Wholesale Produce Market in Los Angeles to feed people and reduce the amount of edible food ending up in landfills. By connecting fresh fruits and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste with millions of people who are experiencing food insecurity, Food Forward is supporting a healthy environment and more equitable food system.

According to the NRDC, up to 40% of food in the United States is wasted. Meanwhile, before  March, 1 in 9 Californians lacked adequate access to food. This statistic is rising quickly, and not only in California. Food Forward’s hunger relief model could spread to more organizations and people all over the country. Because of their dedication to creating benevolence through their incredible work, Food Forward is an Org We Love.
