Around 1 in every 5 adults will have a mental illness in their lifetime. Since 1909 Mental Health America has operated as the largest community based non-profit organization in the nation. Their organization has helped raise awareness and reduce barriers to treatment services with outreach programs and screenings that have helped educate and encourage the communities they serve.
Mental Health America (MHA) is the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. Our work is driven by our commitment to promote mental health as a critical part of overall wellness, including prevention services for all; early identification and intervention for those at risk; integrated care, services, and supports for those who need it; with recovery as the goal.
4,500,000 People screened for mental health conditions 31,000,000 People reached through public education programs 1,265,845 Raised through fundraisers for mental health programs
MHA has also adopted a philosophy called B4Stage4 to start with prevention. B4Stage4 suggests that mental health conditions can and should be treated long before they reach a critical point in the disease process. Mental illness should be diagnosed and treated early on in its progression, like other serious diseases they only get worse with time. MHA starts before Stage 4 with the prevention, identifying symptoms, and developing an action plan to treat, reverse and heal the person that is affected. They also provide tips and guides to living mentally healthy, check them out here.
MHA has an advocacy network of 200 affiliate organizations in 41 states, they work with local communities to provide outreach care and spread awareness all over the country. They provide a free screening service on their website to determine whether you should seek help. Mental illness can be deadly, the signs are not always clear and some victims stay in the dark. MHA helps to educate those who may have a mental illness, as well as peers who can help others on the road to recovery. Positive mental health can be achieved through early identification and intervention for those at risk by educating the community and those they serve and leveraging behavioral health care for those who need it.
Mental Health America is an organization we love because they are taking an active role in making a positive impact on the communities they serve. Through their education and outreach programs, they have reached millions of Americans to prevent and support those needing treatment for mental illness. Thank you, MHA for all that you do for mental health and encouraging communities all over the country.
